Icon Coloring Question
This community has been slightly dead for the past couple of months, so I thought I would try to bring a little activity back into it by posting a question.

Since the new pirates movie came out I have been in a fix to make pirate icons. However, the caps I was attempting to use from Dead Man's Chest are incredibly dark and very difficult to color. I did manage to create a new base image, but the result was that image became slightly over saturated toward the bottom of the picture. I was wondering if anyone had any good suggestions for changing overdark, slightly bland screencaps into great looking icons, color wise.

Picture 1: The coloring is rather bland, dark, and unflattering. In order to slightly change the color I used selective coloring, brightness/contrast layers, and curves. Overall it improved the colors from the original screencap into something a little more flattering.

Picture 2: When compared to the original picture, the colors looked a lot better. Elizabeth and Jack were actually visible within the picture now, their skin turned a darker brown, but nothing like a normal skin tone. However, one of the main problems with the image is that it looks slightly over saturated, and from this image it has become difficult to change the image into a coloring that would make a decent looking icon.

Funny, I was just thinking about this community. Don't know what to do with it, really.
Anyway, after the obligatory screen and softlight layers, plus a bit of selective coloring, this is what I came up with:

It's subtle, but it can be used as a new base. The selective coloring is this

Reds: C -100, M -11
Yellows: Y +18, B +10
Cyans: c +30, M +65, B +100
Neutrals: M +2, Y +5, B -5

The settings were exactly the same on all four icons.
Hope it helped!
