I am fairly new to making icons. I would love some advice. I really want to know how my cropping looks and how textures are flowing with the photos and and text. I also just want to make sure that the 100x100 is right to. Thanks!
I hope someone can help me with this. I tried to ask my friend who is also Photoshop savvy and he had idea =/
I had just recently got Photoshop CS3 (WOOT!) But I noticed that when I do my text on my icons...there's a line that goes underneath it as I type out various words. I had this problem in ImageReady but I wasn't bothered by it. Now that it's on Photoshop, it's annoying because also when I try to move the text around the icon, a big box appears and as I'm moving it around, the box isn't as...erm...how can I say, as a smooth transition as I had it in PS7. There are times where I want the text to be in a certain area and the only way I can get it there is if I zoom into my icon a bunch of times and move it there inch by inch. It's quite annoying. Does anyone know if the line/box can be removed? Images can be seen under the cut
If you have any suggestions or comments, I could use all the help I could get!

What should we do with this community? It's rare if someone posts here, and even rarer if someone replies. Should we shut it down? Promote more and try to get it rolling? I'm open to anything -- I hate to just leave it sitting here.
ETA: New layout. It's much cleaner and more streamlined than the old, but I'm not too sure about the bright blue.

Lately, I have been getting rejected from many an elite comm. Usually, the reason sighted is that my icons are both oversharpened and blurry, and some grainy-ness. Anyone have any advice on how to help with that? Blurry I can understand - I generally don't sharpen at all. Which is why I am a little baffled by the oversharpening comment. I use gimp, so I so tend to rely on levels (and, to a lesser degree, curves) to bring up my icons' brightness. Could that could causing the oversharpened look? Also - how do you fix graininess? Blur it a little?

General concrit is, of course, very, very welcome. Especially text advice, since I'm not too good with it. Thanks everyone!
Since the new pirates movie came out I have been in a fix to make pirate icons. However, the caps I was attempting to use from Dead Man's Chest are incredibly dark and very difficult to color. I did manage to create a new base image, but the result was that image became slightly over saturated toward the bottom of the picture. I was wondering if anyone had any good suggestions for changing overdark, slightly bland screencaps into great looking icons, color wise.
